I'm using the internal serial port of the Kobo. This is 3.3v. The Nano serial/power adapter has both 3.3v and proper RS232 on the RJ45. The manual has the pinouts.

I soldered a right angle connector onto the Kobo board and made a cable to connect to the 3.3v Tx/Rx on the RJ45. It pays to keep the cable short. Those 3.3v TTL signals aren't meant to go far. A small amount of carving away at the rear cover exposed the connector.

If I needed a longer cable I'd put a level converter close to the internal connector and use proper RS232.
