I've seen lots of people bitch because someone didn't provide references for a
claim, but this is the first time I've seen someone bitch because a poster did.

Showing the Snopes url at the bottom of along post is not sufficient.
Some readers may not get that far.

The reader should be told at the beginning that what he's about to
read is a quotation. There's more than one way to do that, but it
needs to be done.

Check any standard writer's guide and you'll see for yourselves.
