Someone else suggested flying up to Llano. As a frequent traveler to there, I wholeheartedly concur. Cooper's is the best BBQ you will put your teeth into in this part of the country (there are a lot of close seconds, but Cooper's is the best). Coopers is one of the "close seconds". Nobody in Texas beats the BBQ of the original "City Market" in Luling, TX (just southeast of San Marcos) http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Writ...=583&RefID=583 Luling even has a little airstrip (T91) a few miles north of town, and there is supposed to be a taxicab service (Luling Cab 830-875-1222) in town so you might be able to get a ride from the airport to go eat BBQ. I've only ever driven to Luling, and never yet landed there in a plane and tried to call a cab yet, but plan to fly there and see how that works sometime in the next few weeks for a BBQ run. There is an unrelated, commercialized BBQ place called "Luling City Market" in Houston, that stole the name. Never ate there, but I think they must be *******s for trying to capitalize on someone else's famous name. |

Hmmm...that's a bold claim. The City Market is the best I've found, I'll say that much. You're making me homesick. There's so much good BBQ in Texas it's pretty much impossible to put one joint at the very top. Lots of times the very best of the best will be at one tiny store on one particular day (let's not delude ourselves: each day the meat is different and so was the smoking process). I've had unbelievable BBQ at one place one day and you go back a week later an it's only okay. Its been awhile since I ate at City Market. But it wasn't tops then. However this reminds me about it and I have to go try again. Regarding the post above about T91 that airstrip is near abandoned. I don't even know if there's a phone line out there. Not sure if even a single soul flys out of there. Better have a cell phone and be patient! |

I've heard rumors that barely passable BBQ can be had in Kansas City. Can any Texans here confirm or deny? -- Dan T-182T at BFM |

Dan Mc Everyone knows the BEST BBQ of all it at the rec.aviation flyin in Pinckneyville, Illinois. This annual bash is May 16, 17, and 18th this year. For some feel of what the flyin is like see the faq at http://www.ousterhout.net/pjy-faq.html . If you plan to drop in this year drop Mary an email at so she knows how many groceries to buy. Judging by Alabama and Georgia BBQ, I don't have high hopes for the Carolina version, but I am willing to be convinced it's fit to eat. You buying? ;^) My problem with Deep South BBQ is that it's based on pork. Hell, *anybody* can make pig taste good. It take real artistry to turn a beef brisket into something delectable to eat. And don't get me started about that thin, vinegary sauce they use down here... -- Dan T-182T at BFM |

Jay...
If you have a day to fly out/around, I HIGHLY recommend hopping over to New Braunsfels (KBAZ i think) and taking a cab/rent a car to the Grist Mill in "old town Gruene" (pronounced GREEN). New B has grown out to encompass the former town of Gruene and is a tourist trap. The town and the Guadelupe River basin is a popular spot for tubing and rafting. Rapids are pretty tame, navigable in an inner tube, which people rent for a day on the water. If you make a whole day trip out of it, Id say "float the river" then eat at the Grist Mill. Bring sunblock. Rockin R is an outfitter near the Grist Mill and Gruene. I've used em before, and would again. In your situation, its prolly the most convenient of the large outfitters. The Grist Mill is a signature establishment built on the cliff's overlooking the river. Great Food.. Great Scenery.. Usually a line.. Next door is Gruene Hall.. an OLD wood frame dance hall.. George Strait lives down the road and pops in from time to time to play. So do many other up and coming Texas Country artists. And if you go on my day off, I might even be willing to ride my motorcycle a few hours to come say hi from Houston. But only if thats acceptable on family vacations.. its not the same as dropping by on the north 40. Dave Jay Honeck wrote: We're planning to fly there Sunday, for a week of R&R. Not sure if the weather will cooperate (it's always a crap shoot in spring), but we're planning on spending a couple of days at the Hangar Hotel (the only other aviation themed hotel I've found). I've heard "the hill area" of Texas is quite beautiful, and that there is much to do there. Any recommendations? (Last time we launched for Texas, we ended up in Kitty Hawk, NC. Gotta love the flexibility of GA... :-) Thanks! |
