Although I can respect the impressive engineering in the MiG 1.42, Su
27/37 series, S.47 I can not take them seriously as
5th generation fighters. They are barely 4th generation aircraft.
They are barely and improvement over the F-15.

The Americans have with the F22 produced an air superiority fighter
that is vastly superior to anything else in the
world whether that be French, European or CIS or Russian. By vastly
superior I mean that the kill ratio will be
in favour of the F-22 by a very large margin.

This is easy to understand, the F-22 will detect any opposing aircraft
first, it will then be able to fire a missile first and destroy the it
enemy in large numbers. Modern missiles are quite reliable.

The Russian officers and engineers who set out to produce the MiG 1.42
and S.47 and Su 37 set out to produce an aircraft better than the 35
year old F-15. They succeeded in producing a slightly better aircraft
in some areas.

The USAF strategists and engineers who created the F-22 produced a
completely new concept that makes irrelevant these old ideas.

What the Mikoyan and Sukhoi have succeeded in producing are aircraft
that have the same thrust to weight ratio as the F-15 and the same
armament levels but better instantaneous turn rates due to more
complicated aerodynamics, possibly they have smaller radar signatures
but only by a small amount (a reduction by a factor of 10 is
insignificant). These so called 5th generation aircraft are only
slightly better than the 35 year old F-15. When the F-15 is upgraded
with modern radar (eg AESA) and missiles there is little better about
the new Soviet fighters except better dog fighting though there climb
rates and acceleration is likely to be little better. I understand
that the Russian or CIS short range missiles have evolved exceptional
maneuverability. The F-22 is designed to destroy its opponents well
before a dogfight can occur. I'm sure if a dogfight does occur the
F-22 with its truly exceptional thrust to weight ratio and very high
cruise speed will do very well.

In seeking to produce their own stealth fighters the Russian air force
has acknowledged this.

Attempts to produce stealth defeating radars based in impulses or bi
static principles will loose much of their effectiveness in the
presence of simple noise jamming.
