Default Oshkosh Housing???

As most of you know, after a fairly long 33 year attendance record at The

Montblack got my dorm reservations and I just flat forgot to re-register for
this year. Even at this late date, we could probably get into the UW-O
dorms, but I'm just interested in what else is out there.

1. Camping is out. That was part of the deal. Don't even suggest it.

2. I've looked at the various residences for rent, but the problem is that
you have absolutely no idea if they are the Taj Mahal of Oshkosh or Roach
Heaven.

3. I've also looked at a couple of the other colleges with dorms and they
are sort of pricey for what you get. UW-O ain't cheap, but it seems that
the other ones are further away, you get about the same features, but for
more money.

4. I was thinking of looking at the motels that seem to line Lake Winnebago
pretty much all along the western shore. If anybody has first hand
knowledge of a good one fairly reasonable, would you pass it along?

5. Anybody else with first hand knowledge of something else that might
work, I'd appreciate knowing about it.

Jim

Jim,

I can understand why the Camping is out, my wife said Camping was
great as long as the camp site was Holiday Inn or equilivent.

We decided to try the Bed and Breakfast route for several years and
loved it. I highly recommend it if you haven't tried this before.

We stayed at the Crystal River Inn B&B just outside of Waupaca, WI.
It is a great B&B on the banks of a stream at the foot of the Chain of
Lakes area. There are a number of lakes in the area with great dining
and boating. The Country Club in Waupaca is open to the public with
prices that were MORE THAN REASONABLE. The owner of the B&B cooks a
breakfast that makes the whole trip worthwhile. (A breakfast that
will take you to dinner without a lunch.) The couple that owns it are
really great people and you will more than likely meet several other
Oshkosh faithful while you are there.

Good luck,

Bob

Can't help you with housing suggestions Jim...but on a different topic,
when are you guys heading East? I was thinking about another Left Coast
convoy. Tentative plans for the Allison brothers is heading East Friday
the 20th with the requisite stop at KIOW for the pre-OSH festivities the
21st.

I can have ground transportation. It is a little scam we've played with a
consenting used car dealer every year for a long time. That's neither here
nor there.

I have no first hand experience, but you mentioned Lake Winnebago. Instantly
I thought why not hire a Winnebago type mobile home. This covers a the
ground transportation side of things, and from what I hear, they can be
quite comfortable. Certainly better than camping, which you already said you
don't want to do.
Just a thought.

Not a problem; we are also thinking about Friday departure. HOWEVER, my
friend, bedpartner, and co-conspirator got REEEEL nervous when we apparently
crossed paths somewhere around Elko, reported to each other the same
altitude and GPS location, and still couldn't see one another. She got
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL nervous when the four of us were in a loose gaggle
towards OSH, reported the same information, and still couldn't see one
another.

We're going to have to find a way to address that problem.

Hey Jim ! !

I got an offer you might find palatable ! ! I have a cottage ON
LAKE WINNEBAGO ! ! It's only 13 miles from OSH ! !

Now the bad news, . . .13 miles DUE EAST ! ! Actually, . .that's
not such bad news. Down to Fond Du Lac, and back up the other side.
You can make it in about 35 - 40 mins.

Cottage has 3 - 4 bedrooms, AIR CONDITIONING, full kitchen / bath
and even a sailboat ! ! 26 ' Nice beach for wading or swimming.
Got color tv radio . .magazines, . .garbage disposal,. .
bicycles, . . .walking trails nearby, . ( in case you haven't had
enough at the show ).

An . .shucks, . .since we're such good buddies, . .I could let you
have it for . . hmmmmmmm . . say . .$ 50.00 a night ?

You can even see the airshow from my dock !! Especially when they
have "smoke - on" .

Might not be the Taj Mahal, . .but it's very nice !

If you're even remotely interested, . .I can send you some pics.

Shoot me an email at .

Not in a day where I leave the house at 6 am and don't get back until 10 at
night. Gail is in Boston and I forwarded your email to her about midnight
last night. I was waiting for her response before I answered you back.

Thanks, Jim. Just wanted to make sure you got it okay. I know your "rule"
about responses about technical matters being preferred on the group. This
one, however, was more personal and I didn't really want to broadcast the
particulars. We're going to be using it next year and it'll be nice if
there's a room available for us.

John Poppy at Portage, WI has in the past set up a bus to
run from the local motel... just a little further out than
Ripon. I usually stop at Portage for fuel and a meal when
Oshkosh ATIS says the airport is closed. :-)

Camping on the Field, motels nearby.
