Perhaps Friday Harbour would be best. I was looking for something with a quiet town that I could mostly walk around. I was looking for something that has good access to tour boats for Whales hunting (looking that is). Friday Harbor on San Juan Island is not a wild party town. It is just more of a town than Eastsound on Orcas Island. Friday Harbor House is on the bluff overlooking the harbor. It's not cheap, but it is premiere accommodations. http://www.fridayharborhouse.com/ There is a whale museum in Friday Harbor who offers whale watching tours. On another part of San Juan Island is Roche Harbor, more premiere accommodations. http://www.rocheharbor.com/ I've never seen Orca whales, but I have seen migrating grays and humpbacks off the Pacific coast.
