I keep a pack of alkaline batteries in the airplane.. A 30 pak I get
from Home Depot... I have switched from NiCd, NiMh, Li, etc., batteries to alkalines for back up in the 195 and 295 in the plane... Also for the Lightspeeds, the prop tach meter, the LED flash lights, etc... Also in the antenna analyzers, the frequency counter, the Nikon F5, and on, and on, in my shop... After I idly did a cost analysis one night I realized that by the time you purchase batteries and chargers, and put up with the rapid self discharge, and the lower voltage, and buying new rechargeable batteries on nearly an annual basis, you are money ahead to simply use alkalines... I don't think they are Duracells (although they might be made by that company). I've been using the Costco (Kirkland brand) batteries for years and they're definitely inferior to the Duracell and Eveready branded versions. Of course at that price and in that quantity, I don't really mind that they don't last as long. They're still a good deal. John Galban=====N4BQ (PA28-180) |

The batteries at Costco that have "Duracell" written on the packaging and on the batteries had better be Duracell batteries. And yes, they were repackaged, at least the AA size. They used to be in one huge long strip, and now they are packaged in a wider, shorter box. Much easier to transport and store that way. I assume that's what Blanche is talking about, not that Duracell batteries have been packaged as rebranded Kirkland batteries (which I can't imagine they would, given that Costco sells Duracell branded batteries). I fly in the Wash. DC ADIZ and often rent a plane with only one radio.
So, I carry a Vertex VXA-700 as backup. It's the only radio I know of that has the LIoN battery to provide a longer life. It's also smaller and lighter so less chance of leaving it behind. It's worked well for me, to get clearance and listen to ASOS before leaving as well as to get back in the ADIZ in a plane with a busted audio system. (Radio apparently worked, but mic or headset didn't.) -Malcolm Teas |
