My backup vario in my current and my last glider has been a Westerboer with pressure sensors like these: http://www.westerboer.de/Seiten/vw1000.html The one I have has a lovely tone - much nicer than Cambridge - and it indicates in absolute synchronicity with my Cambridge302. They both are on the same total energy probe. I prefer it when working really weak lift. They sold for about $500. Herb My old backup was a Westerboer 910 which I got after using a 921 for a few years - awesome varios! I now use a 1020 setup for electronic TE compensation - and prefer it to my SN10 (TE probe). I really think that until you get into the top end (?) Butterfly or S80 varios, the Westerboers are the best. Or maybe they just work better in LS's... ;^) Kirk LS6-b 66 |

Its the predecessor to the B.400. I've been using one as a backup to the SDI C4 in my Libelle for the last 10 years. It makes nice noises, is one of the fastest responding varios I've flown with (much faster than the C4), and since it will easily run for over a day on the 9v PP3 battery it has for an emergency power, its excellent insurance against main power failure I got it second hand with a dodgy power switch, sent it back to Mike Borgelt who gave it a full overhaul for a very reasonable price and considerably faster than I expected. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org

Thanks Martin. Still on the hunt for a B400. Steve I've got an 80mm B400. It's my backup, it works great. No real motivation to part with it other than at some point I am going to want to redo my panel with small gauges. I would probably replace with a 57mm B400... wait.... what the heck is the story with Borgelt? MIA at a couple of US distributors, now rather expensive at another one. - Evan Ludeman / T8 |

Doh! As Homer would exclaim. Measure twice cut once........sorry I need a 57mm. The 80mm is just too big for my limited panel.
Many thanks for the post |

Hi Evan, as I dig into Borgelt more and more......agreed! Bloody annoying. Hmmmm may need to consider options. I think the Tasmin V1000 is also worth a look. Our club Puchacz has one installed. As I've been known to go soaring solo in the Puch, I've paid the Tasmin a fair amount of attention. Its noises are nice and its response rate is good. It uses a circular LCD display with series of blocks round the edge that show in sequence so you read it like an analogue dial. There is a digital averager readout in the screen centre. Nothing to fiddling with either: the only controls are on/off and a pair of buttons for volume control. I've also helped a clubmate install a V3 in his glider. It seems quite a nice instrument and easy to read, but for two points: (1) its set-up menu is a bit of a fiddle (2) its noises are irritating, the more so because there's no option to have silent deadband around zero (or wasn't with that firmware version). The only choices were silence or a continuous drone from zero sink on down and it used a tone that would get on my nerves. -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org
