Default TRAFFIC ALERT! TRAFFIC ALERT!

I too have to work hard to see other traffic from my 172 & I know that
some of my friends are better at spotting traffic than I am. Perhaps
it depends on our individual eyesight when the eye lens muscles are
relaxed. Supposedly the eye should then focus at a far distance, If
there is no background clutter, such as only a hazy sky, the best
answer would be to get a good pair of prescription sunglasses, cut for
best visual acuity at infinity - even if we don't wear glasses
normally.

On the other hand, every serious potential near miss I have ever
experienced involved a high performance aircraft that never saw me, and
under the technical rules-of-the-road should have yielded to me.
Pilots that I've observed sweeping out airspace at a high rate of
speed, seem to spend proportionately more time looking at the panel
rather than outside. The J-3s etc never give collision trouble.

Leveling off at 7,500, CJ contemplated calling Joshua Control and asking if they had the tail number of that yahoo
he'd done the aerial dance with. Then came the epiphany. There it was, right in front of him. The altimeter was nailed
at 7,500 and the DI was right on the bug set at 358. CJ was the yahoo.

How high were you AGL? What is the compass card deviation? Was he still 'east'?

Hate those moments, but gotta keep the eyes outside...

The hemispheric rule is based on the course, compass deviation would not
change the course.

I asked CJ to respond to the pertinent questions raised by the RAP
community:
1. He was at least 4,000 AGL when the incident occurred.
2. The course line was, as stated in the original post, 358 Mag.
3. Heading is irrelevant, since 91.159 applies to the course.
4. Same with compass deviation card.

Was your original post a piece of creative writing, posted under false
pretenses in order to get some technical advice and editing? :-)

Well, John, on the one hand I was sorely tempted to tell you to put a sock
in it. But this is Usenet, after all - and you did include a smiley.

Creative writing is an ambiguous term. If you meant fiction, no the event
occurred and was transcribed that afternoon. CJ filed an ASRS report the
following day regarding a violation of FAR 91.159 and made me wait until
after he received the ASRS receipt from NASA before allowing me to make it
public. Somewhere in the warrens of Joshua Approach, there lies an
incriminating tape recording of the event.

Feel free to apologize for the false pretenses slur.

No one in their right mind would rely on, much less solicit technical advice
from Usenet denizens. I get that by buying lunch for my CFI buddy.
Information maybe, certainly opinions..., but never, ever advice.

Editing!?!? ...by that same bunch? Ya gotta be kiddin'!

Your "virtual" friends are no different than your CFI buddy. You listen,
then decide.

BTW, check out that "no" after "If you meant fiction," ...just kiddin'! g

"I'll have the lunch buffet, please ...and a Diet Coke."

Montblack :-)
Never met a comma, I didn't like.

Well, of course, you got me. I should have put a full-stop there. G

"Garcón..., check please," he said grimacing. "Do you take discover card?"

You'll just have to take my word that I had the o with the ' in Garcon... I
guess the font set didn't support it.
