Yup... It's been pretty good for their stock performance though...

You should be so lucky as to have a choice.

Garmin's competitors are a bunch of weenies.

Boy, isn't that the truth? Lowrance, with all of its nautical might,
has proven to be nothing but a bottom feeder (and I own and like a
2000c, BTW). And AvMap may as well go back to Italy, because they
clearly don't understand marketing in the US.

It's really a shame, cuz without competition Garmin can just keep
stuffing their over-priced dinky x96's down our throats, knowing that
they're the only weather game in town.

How about the www.aviationsafety.com

Large screen, weather, charts, approach plates. I don't have one, but it
looks real attractive, lower cost to boot..

I'm pretty happy with my Garmins. Most of us are. You, Jay, are about
the ONLY one complaining.

I like Garmin portables; I've had five of them, up to the 496 I have now.

That doesn't mean I'm satisfied with my choices. The 496 is great for what
it does, but it could be better in several ways and cheaper, too.

Where's the price/features pressure on Garmin coming from? Nowhere, right
now.

Well, what features that Garmin does not offer would you like to see?

Jay says a larger screen. OK, seems possible. What else?

Let's get rid of the wires. Rechargeable or AA battery powered compact
remote mountable Bluetooth GPS and WX/XM radio transceivers? Garmin already
makes the G10, a little handy dandy Bluetooth GPS smaller than a large pack
of gum. WXWorx already makes a Bluetooth Weather and XM radio transceiver.

Larger screen in portrait mode (as per Jay's request)

Terminal procedures with GPS overlay.

Basically, let's say "most"of the features of FlightPrep's chart case but in
a non Windows sans hard drive format. If the screen and the memory card are
large enough, then maybe add the sectional charts. Heck, I wouldn't even
mind if I had to switch memory cards enroute. Or have multiple card slots
to add software features as your flying needs and wallet allow?

Flight plan entry that recognizes airways. CCC V16 ENO for example.

Twist-knob data entry. Quick connect, yoke mount docking station. All
waypoints for approaches (probably forbidden by lawyers). Customizable page
order with ability to skip pages.

The 496 has a screen resolution of 480x320... Exactly half of what the
standard' VGA resolution is listed as... Hell, even a rather old laptop
will have at least VGA (640x480) resolution and most these days will have
at least 1024x768...

With regards to portrait mode, in my opinion, it is only important if you
are one of those who navigate with your map in "course up" vs "north up"
orientation... Or perhaps if few of your flights are east-west oriented...
Considering the fact that east-west distance across the country is greater
than the north-south distance, I can understand their rational for
orienting the display that way... I suspect that many of us would rather
that the display was close to laptop size, but at that point, it starts
getting more difficult to find a place to put the unit on many aircraft...
I get away with a large display by running a moving map program on a
laptop and since I rarely fly with anyone in the right seat, it works for
me... Having your right seat passenger holding your laptop for you is kind
of inconvenient... The size of probably dictated by what can fit on many
yokes...
