So where you flying for Turkey Day?
"A Lieberman" wrote: What's your ETA? Hey Dan, Mid afternoon on Wednesday is a guestimate. I will know much more either tomorrow or Tuesday. I will post when I know. I'll be flying across southern MS & LA Wednesday morning, heading for Houston. Listen for Cutlass '87D if you get off early. Looks like we'll have great weather. My wife has an eye appointment Wednesday morning and need to clear it thru the doc whether flying will affect her eyes. "Eye pressure" problems (AKA early stages of glaucoma) and not sure if she will get the full exam or just a cursory check. If there is any adverse affect, then we will come down rise and shine on Thursday morning. Hope she's fine & you get to fly. Happy Thanksgiving. -- Dan C172RG at BFM |

So where you flying for Turkey Day?
"Ross" wrote: I agree with Jay. Do not waste a minute. We lost my little 5 year old co-pilot grand daughter this last July to a freakish reaction to a spider bite. We are still grieving. Cherish every moment. Oh, no. That's just awful. I have a 4-year old grandson. The thought of something happening to him is unbearable, so I know your loss must be terrible. So where you flying for Turkey Day?
We took off in a clapped-out rental Cherokee 140, on a hot summer's day --
and the door popped open right after rotation! You too? I took my mom and dad to visit my sister - Teterboro to Ithaca. It was their first flight with me, and I had just gotten my instrument rating, so I filed IFR for practice though the day was brilliant VFR. We get into the plane, and I pull out my checklist and her first thought is "my god, doesn't he know how to fly this thing - he needs the instructions???". We get our clearance, taxi to the runway and await our takeoff clearance. And wait. And wait. Half an hour later with the motor cranking the hobbs I finally shut the engine down - might as well not pay for waiting for a line of jets to land all day. Right then the tower says that if we're ready we are cleared for immediate takeoff. Well, uh... not really. I start up again, and wait, and wait... an hour on the hobbs before we're cleared for takeoff. It had gotten quite warm in the cockpit, and my mom had opened the door. I didn't catch this, and as we're climbing out I notice that it's hard to talk on the radio. Also, there's a breeze coming from somewhere. My mom notices the sky showing where the door should be closed, and my dad (in the back) holds on to her to keep her from being sucked out like from a jet plane. Knowing that the open door is not a hazard, but distraction by it is, I just tell my mom "don't worry, just open the door and close it again." We try a few times, no dice, so we landed at Caldwell, shut the door, and continued on. There was a forty knot headwind, and my mom noticed the same lake was in the same position for a long time. We're not moving! We're going to fall out of the sky!. Well, we don't, and eventually make it to Ithaca with no further incident, and have a great visit with my sister. That was door day. The car we got picked up in had the door fall off. There was a problem with the door in the building she was living in (I forgot what the problem was), and there were a few other things that had to do with doors that day. Both she and my dad continued to fly with me. Jose -- He who laughs, lasts. for Email, make the obvious change in the address. |

So where you flying for Turkey Day?

news:C2%ff.345892$084.243468@attbi_s22... To all you who are blithely heading off to spend time with your family over this Thanksgiving holiday, please stop to realize that there will come a time in your life where you would do *anything* to spend just one more boring Turkey Day with your folks. I think of all the times that I childishly bitched and moaned about "how awful" the holidays were, and weep at the realization that I could have spent so much more time actually getting to know my Mom and Dad better. Don't waste a minute. I remember the first time I took my mom up for a ride. It was a short ride from Spencer to Spirit Lake, Ia, about 25 miles. This was just a few months after I had gotten my ticket and used a rental C-152. About half way into the flight, I looked over at Mom and asked her how she was doing. She replied with something like "I'm ok, what about you???". I was fine. It was a smooth and uneventful flight. I think she was more concerned about me than herself. I haven't had the opportunity to take her up again lately yet. I've taken my dad for a ride a couple times. Once was a round trip between Spencer and Spirit Lake in a rental C-152 and once in my Ercoupe from Fort Dodge to Humboldt. When coming in for a landing at Humboldt, I wasn't set up the way I liked so I did a go around. My dad started taking flying lessons back in the early 40's in a Luscombe but never soloed and also flew in B-17's during WWII so he enjoys flying. I hope to take him up again. I took my brother for a ride once from New Ulm to Sleepy Eye, Mn in my Ercoupe. Since my brother weighs almost twice as much as I do, I carefully checked the W&B before that flight. He only wanted to fly straight and level. He enjoyed it but was a bit nervous. My uncle came to Humboldt a few years ago and saw my Ercoupe and said he wanted a ride with me someday. I saw him a few times since but we never got the chance to fly together. He passed away over a week ago. -Greg B. |

Houston. Listen for Cutlass '87D if you get off early. Looks like we'll have great weather. We had "interesting" weather for our flight to see Mr. & Mrs. Montblack, up in the Minneapolis area. The jet-stream was screaming right over us, and thus we were bucking a 55 knot headwind all the way from Iowa City to ANE. The temperature at 5500 feet was minus 15 Fahrenheit. I took a picture of my GPS, showing a ground speed of 86 knots, just to prove it to myself. It was a looong flight. Then, while we were donating all of our money to the Mall of America, an Alberta Clipper swept down from Canada and buried Atlas under 3 inches of light, fluffy snow. Unaccustomed to such abuse, he nevertheless shook it off with aplomb...thanks to six of us sweeping and scraping everything off before departure. (Haven't done *that* in a long time, probably not since flight training in Wisconsin...) The flight home was very nice, into (of course!) another headwind. Only about 15 knots this time, however. Today, it's 50 degrees here. When we left Minnesota, the wind chill was below zero. Gotta love November! -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |
