The bird hit the pylon square, rode up the slanted portion of the pylon and right through the structure between the leading edge flap and the forward spar of the wing box. He felt it, but as there were no inications of any trouble in the cockpit, he made a "routine" approach and landing. Discovered the damage on the postflight walkaround. Those telltale black feathers...and that hole in the leading edge flap. Then there was the guy that hit the flock of pelicans on takeoff - five of them. He got the jet back around and on deck, but not quite as "routinely"... i actually hit a raven riding the beast at steamboat springs. i was coming up the hill to the gas station and he had just flapped off and banked to grab a thermal. broke the headlight and dented the ear. poor guy was messed up but the rangers took him off to a shelter. I've hit a few pidgeons with my truck down in south Texas...and narrowly avoided a flock of turkeys as well. I didn't even think turkeys could fly...unlike Herb Tarlic... or kelly bundy. i hate those freakin bambis running loose. hit one of those antlered rats and get killed. |

![]() Wild turkeys can fly, not very far but they can. While shooting one Eastern Regionals at Quantico from the 1000 yard line I managed to whack a crow in flight about 600 yards downrange..........sheer dumb luck, big puff of feathers and bird bits. Most of us use the whole airplane for birds... Got 2 ducks at once with an A-6 once! :-) Took an eagle in no.2 engine with a B-57 near Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. It sure did make a mess! We got even about two months later, overflew a turkey farm SE of Kansas City. Farmer claimed we killed 3500 turkeys from 500 ft with no weapons on board :-) Domestic turkeys are dumb critters. oxmoron1 MFE |

Wild turkeys are *superb* flyers (when threatened, sudden, short bursts of energy resulting in good climb and high speed not unlike pheasant or quail). We always kept our freezer chock full of tasty wild turkey on our ranch in Northwestern Nebraska. Don't waste your time trying to pluck their stubborn pinfeathers though -- simply skin 'em and be done with it. |

Domestic turkeys are dumb critters. So are clueless military aviators who think buzzing livestock is funny (hint: guess who ended up buying all those dead turkeys?) |

Mike Marron commented without knowing the facts:
So are clueless military aviators who think buzzing livestock is funny (hint: guess who ended up buying all those dead turkeys?) Sorry Mike, but the turkey farm was dead on the centerline of a published lowlevel training route (legal to 500ftAGL). The turkey farm was built after the lowlevel route was established, 8 years after IIRC. The training route was well know to the population, especially the conservation people. I will admit that the nudist colony NW of Hutchison, KS was not on the centerline of that route, but it was within the approved corridor. And we were looking for red commie infiltrators from Nebraska, and we were 500ft AGL there also, legal again. Then again you probably want to complain about the tip tanks we punched off after the eagle strike. JP-4 laden drop tanks are a bit hard to climb with in a crippled airplane on a hot day. We probably created a hazardous waste situation that someone had to clean up, but the option was a flaming crash and dead bodies. And to steal from Geoge Gobel, during that entire time period, not a communist unit larger than a platoon infiltrated south of the Iowa and Nebraska state lines without being detected. oxmoron1 MFE |
