That's my point. No matter what your standards are, there will be those
who
are "just squeaking by above" those standards. They are way below
average -
and may even be called incompetent. But they are above the standards.

No, they aren't. Not the people I'm talking about.

My point is that, based on a vast amount of human experience over our
history, it is apparent that no matter what standards one sets, somehow a
small number of the incompetents get through.

I'm not just talking about people who "may even be called incompetent". I'm
talking about people who truly are. Somehow they manage to get past the
very process meant to filter them out.

Caveat Emptor.

But this is not a failure of standards, but just an indication that we are all
human, and no system is perfect.

I never said there was anything wrong with standards.

There's an interesting way that some institutions deal with this.
Ecample: Harvard Bsuiness School's MBA programs.
Courses (I can't confirm all) are Pass/Fail.
No literal grade. You make the grade or not.
I went to a different institution and had very high grades.
My high school buddy/best man/best friend went
to Harvard (say what you will . . .) and is making incredible
money with incredible opportunities.
Just an FYI example. . .
