Our club has planes at LDJ and CDW, both in Northern NJ. I tend to fly more
from CDW (it's about 10 minutes from me, as opposed to 30+ for LDJ), but
I've been flying at LDJ a lot over the past few weeks.

I've only visited there from the ground, unfortunately. TYS is closer to my Mother's
house, so we stop at Cherokee Aviation. We'll be there on the 3rd, weather
permitting.

George, I sneaked away from a nearby party to gaze at the aircraft at Old
Bridge just this past Saturday. Them trees look mighty close to the runway.
Have they ever caused a problem? Also, do you have a hangar there? They seem
plentiful (at least compared to Farmingdale).

Well, the trees at the departure end of 06 don't usually cause any trouble. They
extend far enough away from the airport that you don't get a sudden downdraft or
anything. The ones at the other end make it real hard to hit the numbers when landing
on 06 and they tend to hide aircraft on short final. Trees don't seem to cause any
problems landing.

The line of trees along the edge of the runway are a different matter. These trees
tend to blanket crosswinds. The result is that you'll be slipping like mad to get in
in a stiff crosswind and it eases up about 50' AGL. The effect is a little flukey,
however. I've learned that, if I can keep the runway in front of the nose on final, I
will be able to make a decent landing there 'cause it gets easier the lower you go.

I don't have a hangar, but there are quite a few, and they're building more. The
airport owners just jumped the price from $300/month to $450/month, and a few people
are pulling out. They're all relatively new, metal construction, with electric
folding doors.

Tiedowns also just went up (from $75 to $85/month), and the owners just implemented a
requirement that all aircraft on tiedown have prop locks. They'll sell you the lock
and buy it back from you when you leave.

They have a "smart" UNICOM there that's a PITA. If you click the mic three times, it
gives you all the airport info. Seems like a good idea, but, if you're on the ground,
it's constantly stepping on aircraft transmissions. If you're in the air and need the
info, aircraft transmissions are constantly stepping on it. It's a real nice feature
when you're coming in from a long run and it's late evening with nobody around, but
they really should shut it off when things are busy.

I'm tied down at the end of the hangar that's closest to the road. The Maule that
looks like it's held together by the layer of bugs on the leading edge. :-)
