I dont care if its been said a thousand times i fail to
see the point of encrypting entries so that they cant be
viewed without downloading some other crap to view them
....whats the purpose of it ..what purpose does it serve
besides ****ing off those who cant view the pics i really
dont see the point of it all

1 It keeps the idiots who insist on using a crippled
newsreader from seeing good stuff. This is a Good Thing(tm).

2 It is also faster, uses less bandwidth, and is more
efficient. That is also a number of Good Things(tm).

My primary reason for using YENC used to be (2). Since
encountering idiots who insist that I must cripple my use of
USENET so as to coddle them because they refuse to use
anything but MSOE, my primary reason for using YENC has become
(1). ****ing off morons who have delusions of grandeur and who
can't do a damn thing to stop me is a Good Thing(tm)

BTW... note the headers on Michael Hoare's post. By Alan
Erskine's logic, the two of 'em must be the same person,
'forging' headers. Alan-me-lad, have you complained to Newsguy
about my 'forged' headers yet?

For once, an enlightened and correct view of this controversy.

You have a method of half plonking someone? Or you dropped a large
lorry on his head?

Gee, son, I'm not ignoring you. I'm pitying you.

You're reaping what so many other clueless MSOE users have sown by their
intemperate rants against YENC (and other useful techniques). I, for one,
would be more inclined towards paying attention to what they (and you) want
if only they had not started off by accusing me of all kinds of things on no
basis whatsoever other than I posted using YENC. When they did that, they
poisoned the well... and now they (and you) get to drink deep.

I repeat: MSOE is a crippled newsreader. I've posted before what the minimum
requirements for a real newsreader are; MSOE fails on all counts. If MSOE
meets your requirements, by all means continue to use it... just don't expect
any sympathy if other people, using real newsreaders, do so in ways that
cause trouble for crippled newsreaders. We who use real newsreaders do not
_have_ to accommodate you who use crippled ones. You do _not_ get a vote on
what I post, when I post it, and what techniques I use to post it. If you do
not wish to use something which can download it, despite the swarm of
cheap/free real newsreaders available for Windows and Mac and (probably,
given the Tux mentality, I don't do penguins so I don't know for sure,
corrections invited) Linux, you are free to do so... Too bad that you won't
be able to see the pix, but that's your choice. Just as you can't make me
post using techniques you like, I can't make you use a real newsreader. I
can, however, ensure that it will be difficult for you to see my stuff if you
don't. You no like? Me no care.

And, oh, yeah... Alan-me-lad, have you contacted Newsguy about my 'forged'
headers yet?

I'm afraid you're spitting into a strong wind here. OE users are
absolutely adament about using it as a news reader even though
you are completely correct that it is crippled by being an add-on
the to E-mail client portion of O6. What OE bigots cannot seem to
understand is that it is slow to decode pictures inline, has
difficulty with multipart binaries, and cannot (yet) decode yEnc.
People who really don't want to get a real news reader and want
to stick with OE are in the vast majority in many NGs, hence it
is impossible to promote the idea that yEnc is a valid encoding
scheme and takes a rather large part of the encoding overhead out
making it faster to upload and faster to download.

Anyone who doesn't like YENC is free to run a killfilter with 'yenc' in it;
every pic I post is posted with YENC and has 'yenc' in the subjectline. If
they don't want to see it, they can damn well killfile it. I don't give a
damn.

I just posted the following in another ng where
the same conversation is taking place ...

-------------

When I started running into yEnc & found that my
old version of Agent didn't handle it, I upgraded,
as I knew I was missing a lot ... found it valuable
for warez, mp3's, & DVD's ...

Don't d/l that stuff anymore, except for the very
occasional sampling of a song but know yEnc isn't
going to go away, so decided I was only depriving
myself if I chose to ignore it ... if you follow a.b.amp,
you have to deal w/ it ... don't think it makes that
much difference in the posting of jpg's the way
I do & don't want the hassle of those who
don't/won't/can't deal w/ it, so don't post that way ...

I just wish people would yell at MS, rather than the
posters

The same happened years ago when I used Free
Agent & couldn't see anything posted in MIME ... I
upgraded to Agent & then could see both Uuencode
& mime ...

Found a mess of cgm files posted recently ... had to
go Google to see what I could use to open them ...

Found I had a nice old version of PSP already
installed which handles them nicely ...

Same when mp3's started showing up ... & all
the other formats which show for the first time ...

Don't have Word or Power Point installed but did
find viewers for the occasional files I see in those
formats ...

If people decide NOT to get a program to help
visualize or hear what's being posted, that's their
prerogative ...

But please don't yell at the posters ...

That might stifle progress

Sj

SJ,

Outlook and Thunderbird would have incorporated it if they felt it was
necessary for the most users.
However, look at how few folks use newsgroups. That's the
key....profitable to incorporate...no

I downloaded XNEWS. I use it mainly in other groups where the posters
don't feel so high and mighty. It works fine.
But in this group many folks have requested no floods and please post in
jpg. DUH!!!!

But they will continue to do their thing...good luck to them, they'll
have the "few"die hards, that are clueless to others around them..
Selfish gits!!!

Would I use it here on the flooders...absolutely not.
