Default RAF Boulmer (England) to close

During the latest Defense cuts, it was announced that RAF Boulmer in
Northumberland is to close in the near future. The base, which presently
houses the School of Fighter Control will re-locate, although the two search
and rescue Sea King helicopters will remain to provide SAR coverage over the
North of England, Southern Scotland and the North Sea. The demise of the
base; the last surviving RAF Station in the North East will obviously be a
huge blow to the local community as it provides both jobs for the local
people and brings' fresh money' into the local economy via the based
Servicemen/woman and their families.
Personnel from 202 Sqn RAF Boulmer will be conducting the Air North (local
Aviation Society) monthly aviation meeting at Callerton Suite, Millers
(formally The Wheatsheaf) at Callerton Newcastle Airport on Wednesday 5th
May 2004 - 18:45 - 21:00.
202 Sqn will highlight their role in Air Sea Rescue as well as their land
duties, which I'm sure you are all familiar with as they are conducted by
their bright yellow Sea King helicopters, which regular appear in the skies
around our area. The role of the School of Fighter Control will also be
expanded upon.
There will be a small charge for the hire of the room, however you are all
welcome to attend (you don't have to be an Air North Member). If you have an
interest in aviation or just want to learn more about the services provided
by the RAF why not come along for an enjoyable night.
