Anyone fly into Stafford on an IFR flight plan? I'm planning on going there
this weekend and I was wondering if there were special procedures
considering it's so close to the ADIZ. Do IFR flights keep their squawk
until touchdown just in case? I'm coming from the NY area. I'd appreciate
any feedback on the cleared route from the northeast. Do they normally route
you around the ADIZ or just around the FRZ?

Thanks,

Marco

There is a handout on the AOPA web site for flying near in and around the DC
ADIZ

Also check out the online training program at FAAST

There aren't any special procedures I know of.

First, the ADIZ is transparent to IFR fliers, so you should have little to
worry about there. Depending on how you enter the ADIZ, you'll likely get
the "Grand Western Tour" or the "Eastern Shore Tour" around the FRZ and away
from KBWI/KIAD traffic. I've actually gotten routed directly over KIAD/AML
twice in the last six years, so it is possible.

If you're at all concerned about go-arounds or missed approaches getting you
anywhere near the ADIZ boundaries, just keep your code until you're down or
cancel on the ground.

(Also, as you probably know, flights into ADIZ airports do keep their squawk
until on the ground.)

Thanks John. I've flown into airports within the ADIZ already but RMN is a
bit weird in that it butts up right against the ADIZ. I have visions of
having to do an extended pattern or something then inadvertently clipping
the ADIZ. Your recommendation of keeping the squawk code is a good one.
Thanks.

FWIW, locals tend to keep the ADIZ squawk for a few miles when leaving the
ADIZ - even if ATC comes confirms we're outside.

I actually did just that and kept my squawk until I landed. I figured it
can't hurt and only help. As an aside, the routing they gave me to RMN was
changed to a shortcut with a direct-to to Nottingham (OTT). It put me *very*
close to the FRZ. I had my Garmin 496 with the XM-provided TFR data so I had
the equipment to stay clear but I requested a slightly better vector anyhow
to be sure. I also wanted it on record that I was cognizant of the FRZ in
case anything gets screwed up.

Thanks for the tips John.

Marco
