Default MOST UGLY GLIDER ?

I just had to expect the poor ole PW5 would get pulled in early on
this thread!

To make it more interesting, how about asking "the ugliest glider
besides the PW-5"?

Default MOST UGLY GLIDER ?

Hi Asborn,
great links to the photo's, thanks for that. I've seen
a PW5
up close here in the UK, but not the SZD-25, I give it my vote as the
ugliest between the two.

I guess though that the designers had a specific result in mind, whilst
keeping
the high wind for early solo pilot's?

Cheers,
Malcolm...

That'll have to be a tie between the SZD-25 Lis and the PW-5 Smyk.

So, Let's see. The most votes so far go too 2 gliders, the szd-25 and
the PW5. Hmm! One was built 45 years ago at a time when a 1-26 was a
high performance glider. (not knocking the 1-26, wish I had one for
those hot summer days) and one was designed in the 90's (?). Which is
uglier? I know what I think! Just asking?

Funny though, no matter how *ugly* they may look on the ground, they all
look beautiful in flight.

I believe that's physiological, we would all rather be up in the sky than
sat at ground level. A powerful and all encompassing emotion for most
of us I'm sure.

I dunno...

The first time I saw a PW-5 I helped rig it, it was
a new ship, beautifully finished, barely flown, it
was light and easy to put together but ugly as sin
(my own personal opinion), but we wheeled it up to
the winch queue. The pilot (old guy, but perfectly
competent), got in, usual checks, hooks on, up slack,
all out... then all of 400ft off the winch (flapping
its wings all the way! 13m wings aren't meant to flap
that much!). This was followed by a hurried low circuit
and an ungainly landing. Quick de breifing by a concerned
instructor, and the whole flapping charade repeats
itself. Third time lucky and the guy gets a circuit
in. My god it looked awkward in the air.

That day I swore I'd never fly one. They say you never
get a second chance at first impressions... Not everything
looks good in the air. Maybe I'm missing out? Nah...

p.s. I'm sure some nerd is going to come along and
tell my how many g's it's rated too and that it's built
like a kalashnikov but as beautiful as (insert beautiful
woman's name here), but this is just the impression
it gave me.

I'd never seen one of them before. It's lovely - I want one!

Ian

PS Ugliest? Dead heat between Kronfeld's "Austria", Slingsby/YS-53 and
Bijave.

Having sat in wave at Port Moak back in October and watched a T53 (The
original slingsby one, not the later YS) higher than me - I was in a Duo
- I am a little careful about what I say about them :-)

In article . net, COLIN
LAMB writes
If motorgliders can be included, that one that was for sale a few years ago
that someone mounted an engine on one wing was not only ugly and weird, it
was a spin waiting to happen.

Wonder if the builder compensated for the engine being on one side by making
one wing shorter than the other?

Colin

Wasn't the Me 141 a bit like that?

Ok, now an argument has REALLY started. My husband and I are
disagreeing about the ugliest glider. I say a genesis is (short
squatty), whereas my husband says the genesis is really quite lovely.
His vote is for the "whale" RHJ-?.
I dunno, but Malcom, I don't have pictures of either, but you really
made us spit out our coffee laughing while reading your new thread.

This thread has me thinking. I wonder how many of us manage to improve the
aesthetics of the glider?

Just a thought.
