At a guess, the ability take measurements along nominated tracks through
an air mass. This is unlike a balloon, which is limited to sampling one
vertical column[1] though that air mass.

[1] distorted by the vertical wind profile, of course, but still limited
by its ability to control only its vertical ascent/descent rate.

Does anybody know what today's flight was about?

I caught it, by trying out the 'virtual cockpit' URL, at a bit below
12000 and some distance south of El Calafete. Initially it seemed to
almost hold height before gliding back to the field, shedding height and
landing.

The flight was in weak wave, but usable for pilot training, flutter
testing using the built-in wing oscillators, systems checks, and
operations experience.
