Default Troubles with Compaq 1550

I switched back up batteries and switched cradles. Since I cant get a
flicker out of it I don't know how to try a "hard restart. Dick

Do you see the charge light when connected to external power. If so,
is it flashing or steady.

Removing main and backup batteries restores it to the cold , as
shipped, state. Replacing them should fire it up. Can't get a harder
restart than that as far as I know. Be careful with the battery doors,
the retaining clips are fragile.

If all fails I'd like it for spare parts!

Default Troubles with Compaq 1550

I've had this problem several times. I'm not sure what fixes it but
eventually, after swapping batteries in and out among three 1500
series Aeros and cradles and batteries, the offending battery (or PDA)
starts working again. Then I put everything back where it was and it
usually works fine. Sorry I can't be more specific. It seems to happen
when the battery is completely discharged for a while.

Default Troubles with Compaq 1550

Update! I let both my 1550s run down during a 5-week outing: no main
or backup battery. Neither one would charge up in the cradle.

But I found I COULD switch on both PDAs while connected to the
chargers even though the batteries weren't charging (or at least the
charging light wasn't blinking). After following the on-screen prompts
to perform the setup procedure, both units began charging their
batteries. I tried it again just to make sure. At least on my 1500s, a
completely discharged battery with a dead backup battery may not
charge up until you've followed the setup procedure (mostly to
calibrate the touch screen). Hope this helps.

Hey Chip, et. al.,

I don't particularly like leaving stuff on chargers all the time. So
for my 1550's I do a CFBackup (that is a full system backup onto your
Compact flash card), charge the batteries well, then remove both the
main and backup batteries before storing the 1550. When it is time to
use them again, you will need to do a CFRestore (restoring the system
just the way you had it before removing the batteries), set the date and
time, and probably recharge the main battery just a little bit. But I
don't have to worry about remembering to charge them periodically or
leave them on the charger all the time.

Larry
