Default PIC seat in England

My wife was watching a BBC show about a guy auctioning off possessions
to buy flying lessons. At the end of the show there are clips of him
sitting in the right seat during instruction. Is the right seat the
PIC seat in British GA aircraft just as it is in autos? Or what's the deal?
