Cars are much more dangerous than planes
Quote: "Cars are more dangerous than airplanes."
Depends. A light airplane flown by a private pilot is about four times more dangerous than a car, which isn't that bad, really, considering that most of us spend very little time in light airplanes and never have serious car accidents. A Commercially-rated pilot in a properly-maintained light airplane presents about the same risk as a car. An airliner flown by an ATR (or Canadian ATPL) is about 11 times safer than a car. So saying that flying is safer than driving is like saying that dogs are friendly animals. It depends on the airplane type and on who's operating it. The training and skill levels and company safety policies probably have the biggest effect, and the redundant systems of the airliner make it safer. Those numbers come from an article I read about 20 years ago. They likely haven't changed a lot. They SHOULD challenge the Private pilot to study and improve his skills and knowledge. If he can reach the same levels as a Commercial pilot (not such a big deal), he improves his chances four times. Some people obsess about reducing their chances of getting cancer, so they'll eat better and quit smoking to cut their risks by 25 or 50%, but the average PPL isn't aware of (or ignores) a chance to cut his flying risk by 75%. Mxsmanic,
They frustrate themselves, and they are a minority among those with whom I interact. Well, on here, they are in the vast majority. From your blog (which you since pulled from your site - I can guess why) it was very apparent that in real life, those frustrated with you (or rather, annoyed) are in the majority, too. -- Thomas Borchert (EDDH) |

I do get violent when faced with a mollusk in human form, though. Those soft, squishy on the inside folk that really should be stepping up more often. Let's go have a beer, mx! |

Although, I've cut myself pretty good with a plane, but not so much with my car. And I use the car so much more than I use a plane, so I would still have to argue that according to percentage-of-time, a plane is still far more dangerous than a car. |
