There are a few openings available in the Idaho back country
mountain flying courses this summer. If you are interested in the
next level of flying, it may be mountain, canyon and back country
flying! Please consider attending one of these seminars with back
country instruction this summer!

If you have heard about the Idaho back country, then you know what I
mean. If you haven't, then please consider browsing and putting
McCall, Idaho on your summer adventure list! McCall is an excellent
place from which to launch into the Idaho back country. There are
50 airstrips in the Frank Church "River of No Return" Wilderness
area, and nearby back country. This is the coolest place in the
lower 48.. (of course Alaska is better, but it is a long way away.
:-)

I've been, it is GREAT! I am on staff for a few weeks this summer.

MOUNTAIN FLYING - HIGH ELEVATION AIRPORT OPERATIONS GROUND SCHOOLS

WHEN: Saturdays:
June 16, 2007 at Centennial Airport (APA), Denver, Colo.
August 11, 2007 at Centennial Airport (APA), Denver, Colo.

Centennial Airport (APA). SPONSORED BY THE COLORADO AIR SAFETY
FOUNDATION: The Colorado Air Safety Foundation is a non-profit
corporation organized and operated exclusively for the purpose of
promoting and furthering education and public safety in the aviation
industry. In Colorado, accident statistics show that pilots without
the skills needed for safe flight over mountainous terrain often get
themselves in situations which are beyond their capability to
handle. The mountain flying course is a program developed to
improve that capability.

THE COURSE: The ground school course was originally developed by the
Colorado Pilots Association in 1986. It is presented in Colorado at
least twice each year and occasionally at out-of-state locations. It
is taught by Colorado pilots who live and fly the mountains in
business and recreational flying. Through the years it has evolved
into one of the premier safety training courses of its kind.

The course takes the student on a simulated flight over several
mountain passes and into a number of high elevation mountain
airports. Instructors take time to discuss factors affecting the
safety of flight at each step on the route and make extensive use of
aerial photography and a technical workbook to illustrate
information needed for a safe flight. The workbook is part of the
course materials provided under the registration fee for the course.

Thanks! Last year we had 3 days of FROST in late June. Of course,
this delayed flying out of Sulphur Creek Ranch (where we based)
until after 10:30 AM... because it took that long for the sun to
shine that deep into the valley. :-)

I took the CAP course 5 years ago (also met you during the ground
school portion, but you might not remember me), and it was one of the
highlights of my entire flying career. I am glad to see new additions
on canyon flying and Idaho. I now live too far away to come up there,
but I would like to encourage anyone else who might be interested that
this experience was worth every penny.

I know that feeling. At Johnson creek, I leave my plane parked on
the west
side of the ruway, so the sun will hit it as soon as it clears the
canyon. Frosty
mornings are common there even in July and August.

Any word on whether or not Sulphur Creek will be open this year?

Last year they got new owners closed the strip to fly-in breakfast
traffic.

Rumor has it that the new owners are going to open for breakfast. I
suspect there will be a lot of info out on the Idaho Aviation
Association's (IAA) web site if/when this happens:

http://www.FlyIdaho.org (IAA)

I am a member of IAA, and I live in Colorado, but enjoy visiting
Idaho!

Hey, your flying career is not over! We are doing the CAP mountain
flying course again in May in Durango for New Mexico and Colorado.

This is CAP training! Write a proposal to your wing commander and
bring an airplane and crew! I can give you contact information if
you request it.

I am glad to see new additions
on canyon flying and Idaho. I now live too far away to come up there,
but I would like to encourage anyone else who might be interested that

Too far? You are a pilot! I'm sure the issue is not distance, but
that old bug-a-boo... $$$ :-(

Yet, I have 4 gents coming from Austria to rent our Cessna-182 from
Poudre Aviation http://poudreaviation.com in March for 2 weeks of
mountain flying. They have to go thru all the TSA hassles and FAA
pilot license conversion to do this, but here they come!

Seriously, talk up a Colorado or Idaho adventure with your buddys,
pack a few airplanes, and I can schedule some instructors for you.

Fly the Colorado Rockys... it is FUN!

I just talked to Lori at McCall, Idaho (KMYL).
There were two cancellations due to illness for this week's course:
June 26-29, 2007, Tue-Fri, BASIC

If you've been thinking about flying the Idaho Backcountry, or
flying into non-paved airports, may I suggest contacting the school,
as below? Leave a message. Rhonda will be in the office on Monday
morning to call you back. :-)

This is the BASIC course into the back country.
Ground school in the afternoon, flying each morning.
See more details, and the web addresses, below.

Need or want a taildragger endorsement?
Lori also has a new super-cub, 180hp, on BUSH tires. FUN!

Best regards,

Jer/ Eberhard
