Video: Siemens' Electric Extra 330 Aircraft

By Paul Bertorelli

At Aero in Friedrichshafen, Germany this week, the giant electrical concern
Siemens surprised the show with an Extra 330 powered by a 350-hp electric
motor. In this video, the company's Frank Anton explained the goal to AVweb
and fliegermagazin's Thomas Borchert.

It does look like an interesting test bed with real muscle. But, the Siemens
spokesman did mention that some endurance was sacrificed for performance. It
will be interesting to see the updates as tests progress, and battery
technology improves.

I'd like to see that aircraft fitted with a fuel-cell and liquid hydrogen tank
to make it more competitive with the performance of gasoline.

This Earth Day, I saw about ten different electric automobiles displayed. There
were cars from GM and Ford, and Tesla, BMW, Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, KIA, Audi,
.... The Toyota Mirai is representative of the current hydrogen fuel-cell
technology: https://ssl.toyota.com/mirai/fcv.html. Scroll down that page for
much more detail.
