Where/when were the pictures taken? It appears that the plane is not
doing too well.

In 1958 or 1959, it was a private program.
But there was no market.

Maybe it was built on speculation, but, Wasn't it competing with the Temco
TT-1 for a Navy production contract?

I am not sure. I remember that the license was acquiried by a Canadian Firm,
for a program in this country, but that's all.
Both airplanes was equiped with the same Continental jet engine.

There is some information and a couple of pictures (both already
posted here) in "Naval Fighters Number Seventy-Two TEMCO TT-1 PINTO"
by Mark Frankel (a Ginter Book).

The Jet Mentor was a proposal by Beechcraft for the "All Jet Trainer"
concept, along with the Pinto. Due to problems with the design
(engine/tailpipe - the tailpipe worked loose after a few flights and
severely damaged the rear fuselage), Beechcraft pulled out of the
competition.

As far as I can tell, only the one prototype was ever built.

I have a friend who used to work at Beech (Raytheon) and will see if
he has any other information on the aircraft.
