Default Overhaul time....

Well, decided to make that move. I managed to get 2040 hours out of my
engine in my Sundowner, and now have another cylinder acting up (both
plugs getting "wet") at slow idle. I just had a cylinder put in (ate an
exhaust valve) last month, so instead of nickle and diming my expenses
away in this engine, I decided to look into a factory remand engine.

So I can be informed when I do talk to the mechanic, has anybody had any
dealings with Air Power in Arlington TX? They have a website at
www.factoryengines.com.

I was told in hangar talk, that a factory remand engine for an 0360 180
horsepower engine would be over $20K, yet this company is offering my
engine for $15,7K. Is this a too good to be true site? I found them in
the controller.com sales paper.

Approximately how much more expenses will I need to do this job?
Realizing labor rates are different, but if a mechanic charges $60 an
hour, how much in labor can I expect for an engine replacement.

Are there other costs I need to prepare for during this engine
replacement?

I used them for my Archer O-360-A4M. Good engine. The Archer's new owner
loves it. I did have the shop pull my fairly new light weight starter off
and replace it with a working starter. (Air Power said all they needed was a
'core'.) The new engine came with a light-weight.

Also had the oil quick drain taken from the old block and put on the new.
Air Power even shipped two oil filters as you will change the oil at 5 or 10
hours. (can't remember)

I put a factory reman in my Tiger last year. I got it from Air Power. Was a
little
over $15K. I think the shipping was around $500 or $600 and that includes
the new engine and returning yours. The engine is shipped straight from
Lycoming
and took about a week to arrive. We replaced the Lord mounts and hoses and
had the oil cooler cleaned up too. Total cost was around $18k by the time
I got it installed. Down time was a couple weeks. Engine was an O360 A4K.
I found Air Power to be good to work with.

How much for the swap? Depends on what else you need. Shops charge
around 8-12 hours for the basic swap.

You may very well need (or should strongly consider):
* alternator overhaul (it is not included in the engine price)
* propeller overhaul
* new engine baffle seals
* muffler overhaul
* carb heat shroud overhaul
* exhaust stack repair/replacement
* motor mount strip and/or repaint
* new oil hoses
* new fuel hoses
* new quick drain
* new air filter
* spinner bulkhead(s)
* spinner
* new alternator belt
* new alternator or starter mounting brackets
etc.

This stuff can easily drive up the price another $5k parts and labor.
All above work is MUCH cheaper when the engine is out

Thanks all for the replies. I ended up not going with Air Power since
they did not have my engine in stop 360-A4K. They said 5 weeks delivery
time. In addition, they required 9000.00 core deposit check (not to be
cashed and returned when they received the old engine).

I am getting the overhaul through the recommendation of my local A&P.
The engine will be pulled tomorrow and shipped Wednesday to Flordia.
Projected cost of engine overhaul will be 13,2K and no core deposit
required.

You may very well need (or should strongly consider):
* alternator overhaul (it is not included in the engine price)


I just had an overhauled carb put in. Price above includes credit for
my overhauled carberator.

* propeller overhaul


I have a constant speed prop, and since the engine will be balanced, my
A$P recommended to getting the prop balanced as well. This will be
done.

* new engine baffle seals
* muffler overhaul
* carb heat shroud overhaul
* exhaust stack repair/replacement
* motor mount strip and/or repaint


The above will be checked while the engine is pulled off the plane.

* new oil hoses
* new fuel hoses
* new quick drain
* new air filter


I will be getting all hoses replaced.

What kind of service should be done on the spinner?

thorough check for cracking.

one suggestion: clean the firewall (perhaps even painting it).

A real, elbow grease, intensive job on the firewall and cowlings... Scrape,
sand and polish until the firewall is in new condition and then clear coat
or paint as appropriate... Replace any grommets, cable clamps, etc., that
are looking doggy or tired... Polish the flexible control cables... New
firesleeves and clamps for all hoses... Color coordinate all clamps, ties,
lacing, etc., in bright colors... Look at the routing of all control
cables, hoses, scat, etc., and clean up the factory spaghetti by lacing up
everything into bundles... New fastener hardware wherever it shows screw
driver or wrench gouges.. Replace all rubber baffling with new silicone
material.. Buff or polish all the metal baffles back to new condition...
New stainless screw/cam-loc kit for the cowlings..

Have the rebuilder only put a thin, fog coat of flat black on the cylinders
and case, including the rocker covers, for improved heat radiation... I know
that brightly painted engines look pretty, but you won't see bright, shiny,
colors on a $50,000 racing engine, for a reason... Also, have him use
silicone gaskets under the rocker covers for leak control...
You could also send the exhaust pipes out for ceramic coating inside and out
which will markedly reduce temps under the cowlings... Also, consider the
Slick Start electronic magneto kit... Boy, does it start nice and idle
smooth... (these two are really luxury items, but I throw them in for
completeness)

At our field I helped a little one of the guys putting fresh rebuilds on a
Twin Commanche and this was the thrash he/we went through... The bird looks
better than factory new...

Mostly elbow grease and only a little money...

He's suggesting an overhauled ALTERNATOR, not a carb

He's suggesting that you have the prop itself and its governor overhauled,
not just balanced. Depends of course on when it was last done and what
the recommended interval is on your plane.

I didn't see anything about magnetos and new vacuum pump on the
list, but both may be worthwhile.

When our engine was off, we took the opportunity to strip and paint
the firewall. Some people also clean and paint the inside of the
cowling.

This is also a relatively easy time to refurbish any wiring -- check
the wiring harness to the alternator/battery, landing light wire,
engine pump wire, basically any wires that go through the firewall
are hanging loose and need to be rerouted and resecured when the
engine goes back on so this is a good time.

The ceramic coating is not expensive... Check the hot rod guys...
The Slick Start system is probably 2 grand ballpark (swag - suggest you do a
google on it)... For that you get 2 brand new dual function mags, and plug
wires, controller, etc... The system retards the spark for starting which
makes it start like your car... Any failure or loss of electricity and it
drops back to being regular magnetos and you keep on trucking... slick,
really - and certified... And they project fuel savings over magnetos..
