Default IGC Technical Specification for Flight Recorders - updated

After discussion in the IGC Air traffic, Navigation and Display Systems (ANDS) Committee and the GNSS FR Approval Committee (GFAC), the Technical Specification for IGC-approved GNSS Flight Recorders has been updated with Amendment 5 and is now available on the IGC and GFAC web sites that are given at the end of this email.

Although the FR Specification is a 52-page document intended mainly for Flight Recorder manufacturers, some glider pilots and officials may be interested in some of the subjects covered.

Some subjects of the amendment include:

Security: Key lengths for security of IGC flight data files for the various levels of IGC-approved FRs using encryption systems such as RSA, DSA, ECC..

Engine recording under the IGC codes ENL and MOP, including electric engines such as Front-mounted Electric Systems (FES)

Appendix A - IGC file structure - some new Three-Letter Codes (TLCs) have been added that are used in some recent designs of Flight Recorders.

Appendix E - Updated wording on IGC-approval levels to bring this appendix into line with the annual GFAC report of January 2019 that was part of the 2019 IGC Plenary agenda and approved by the Plenary in March.

Appendix G - Security. Update on Public/Private Key Cryptography (PKC) systems.

Comments are invited on any of the provisions of the Specification.

Regards to all and great soaring in 2019 !
