Hmmmm, not to thrash this dead horse any further....but
does the number of pilots who post to the OLC also
count as competitors?

I don't think so, no. Not in my mind.

There are a lot of people who compete on a casual basis (local clubs,
friendly OLC-based rivalries, etc), but that's a far cry from driving
hundreds of miles, paying money, certifying loggers, getting a contest
number, and filling out the necessary paperwork to compete in a real
sanctioned contest.
