Does anyone know what kind of plane he was flying, or the engine he was using? How about his level of experience?

The short answer is I have no idea, I don't know the guy and have never
heard of him

Here are some search results, using the name of the pilot from the
articles. I think this is _probably_ the aircraft (KR2):

http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinqu...umbertxt=24065

Although I found this too:

http://nt-i.info/s-ultralight.html

Maybe... although ultralight + Corvair engine + KR2 doesn't really add
up. Then again, since when did the popular media verify the facts
(opinion)? In the 6th paragraph in this link, the writer seems
uncertain of the pilot's gender:

Now I've started on one of my anti-media rants! But seriously, I'm glad
the guy is OK. Too bad the airplane is a wreck.

The has been a KR-2 accident discussed a little over on the Matronics Zenith
list. No real data yet, though the original Matronics poster is based at the
same airport and member of the same EEA chapter. Here's a link to that
discussion.
