Default GDL69A or GPS 496?

I flew with my boss for steak at Harris Ranch last night in his A36. On the
way, we got to talking about GPS systems. He's got a Garmin 396, and was
telling me that it (and the 496) would talk to the GNS430W the same way as
the GDL69A, complete with showing the weather on both screens and
transferring data between them. This seems seriously nifty, since it's $4000
cheaper than the GDL69A. If that's the case, why does anyone buy the
dedicated box?

I believe the GNS430W will talk to the 496 in terms of flight plans and such
(Through an RS232 connection) but not the other way around. The 496 will
also display the traffic from a Garmin GTX330 Mode S transponder. You can
also wire the 496 to an audio panel such that you will have call-outs (like
terrain) through your headset(s).

However, I am not an expert on this subject (I just researched the
connection possibilities).

Marco is right.

We like the 496 solution. Better display than the 530.
Easier to upgrade by far. b hale

Now Jay has to figure out a diplomatic way to tell his boss that he is
mistaken...

But you may have just given him the answer. "You don't want to do THAT boss.
The resolution on the 496 is much better and it shows more weather features
than the 530 can!"

I would suggest your boss read up on the Garmin GNS430W installation
guide, and point out to you where the GXM30 is harnessed to it via
USB. Obviously he knows features about the GNS430W that I do not.

Call me crazy, but I would bet that you know more than his boss does about
the GNS430W.

*shrug* He doesn't have one. That's why I asked here.

Many pilots are successful/very busy in their respective careers so it's
kind of unfair to expect everyone to have the time to learn (and remember)
all the intricacies of their complex avionics' features. They simply don't
have the bandwidth. I hope I didn't insinuate that your boss was incompetent
for getting the interface details wrong.

Quite good, and the flight was enjoyable, too.

We'd planned to go to Half Moon Bay, but a Presidential TFR squelched that.
Harris Ranch made a nice alternate. They'd expanded since the last time my
boss was there.

If I'm back when the weather is nice, we'll do Half Moon Bay and get in the
San Francisco tour while we're at it.
