What is status of Turf Soaring? I hear they are flying again?

No, they are not. (At least not through the end of last week.)
We (members of the Arizona Soaring Association) were given a short presentation on the status of Turf (i.e. the Pleasant Valley Airport) at our annual awards dinner Saturday night by Phil Corbell, VP of Friends of Airport Preservation Inc. I fill forward to anyone who e- mails privately me a summary of what he said. Sadly, the outlook is dim for soaring at Turf. -ted/2NO |

On the other hand, there is a flight posted on OLC for Saturday 7
April by KD Jenson, in a DG 400 which according to the FAA database is motorless (N14YC). Does anyone have any knowledge of this flight? Who did the tow? |

Upon further review, there are flights posted by this pilot on March
8, 26, and 28th, which explains the rumor that BT heard. I just called Turf and asked if they were flying again, and they said "No, we are not." 2NO |

The DG400 in question is a self-launcher that has been based at Turf
for the winter months. This and a few other aircraft have been flying there from time to time. No commercial towing there at the moment. Mike |

Just out of curiousity...since this is a publicly funded airport...if ASA had a towplane they could operate from here? |

That has been the question de jour among the rASArs for some months
now. The answer is complicated by the fact that the lease is delinquent. If the lease was current and paid up (no those are not the same thing in this case), the leaseholder could control the activities there to the degree that his ability to pay the lease is dependent upon doing so. In other words, "I can't pay the lease if I can't run the business, and I can't run the business if I let anyone come here and do what they want." The state recognizes that. But since the lease is expired and in arrears, the situation is gemucked. A self-launching glider (the DG 400 referenced earlier) has been operating there over the winter. Powered traffic are still allowed to operate. But as one of our members pointed out, a motorless glider cannot take off in formation with a powered aircraft there if a piece of rope connects them. 2NO |
