Chinook: stalwart of armed forces air operations

(EXCERPT) THE Chinook is regarded as one of the best battlefield
support aircraft used in military operations.

Its distinctive twin-engine is one of the helicopter’s greatest
assets, alongside its load capacity, which makes it a straightforward
task to load and unload quickly.

The aircraft is capable of airlifting 45 fully equipped troops or up
to ten tonnes of cargo, including small vehicles.

The original Chinook design dated back to the early 1960s, and first
took to the air in September 1961. Several versions have since been
developed, including the Chinook HC2s, which entered service in 1980,
and the Chinook HC3s Special Forces transport helicopter, equipped for
extended-range and reconnaissance missions.

The craft, which flies at up to 185mph, is designed to operate in
hostile mission environments, over all types of terrain, at l...
