Great write-up Jay. I got stuck here at my desk at work last week and
couldn't pull off what would've been my first great cross-country
adventure in the new (to me) Tiger. I followed along on Google News
and the Airventure web site all week and it's great to read here that a
good time was had by all.

Jay,
These are the reasons I prefer Sun-N-Fun. A lot of cool stuff not too
many people.

[snip] Eric Rood was there (with some little French girl pilot who he
SWEARS is just a "friend" :-)

Do I have a great wife, or what? She lets me go to AirVenture with other
women!

Hell, yes!

The "little French girl pilot" is Laurence Bonneau.
You may recall the posting I made in late January about spending a day in
the emergency room with a friend who slipped on the ice and separated
their shoulder when we were preparing to go flying. That was Laurence.

I'm just kidding you, Eric. She was really nice, and fun to talk with at
the party. And she knew her flying stuff, too.

I'm surprised she's single! I can think of about 200 pilots who would love
to meet a chick like her...

Then -- best of all -- on our last day, we returned the bikes to the
Goodwill store, and they gave us a receipt for a $40 tax write-off!
Free bikes for the week!

Uh.... Jay ...... A $40 tax writeoff isn't the same as a refund. Those
bikes cost you about $25-30. Cheap, but it ain't free.

Hey, your crappy reality can't burst my fantasy bubble!

I have no idea if Sean pulled any strings to get the SOT in the EAA
lineup, but with all the backing they have from other big-names in the
airshow business, I doubt it was necessary.

You make many good points, Scott. And I have no way to refute them.

However, the fact remains that one of the best new airshow performers in the
country, Skip Stewart -- a guy who has recently been written up and profiled
in half a dozen top-notch aviation magazines as being THE up-and-comer in
the airshow industry -- sat on the ground WITH HIS PLANE, itching to go up,
while three relative unknowns took to the skies over OSH.

That is crap, IMHO, and stinks of nepotism, whether it was or not.

Could be Skip Stewart was not willing to fly for free. None of the airshow
pilots at OSH get paid. Could also be he had a scheduling conflict. Could
be a multitude of factors other than nepotism.

I sat with one of his (very frustrated) sponsors several times during the
week, who told me that Skip would have PAID for the privilege of performing
at OSH.

His plane was there, he was there, and he was waiting for the call. It
never came, and it sure is hard to say why.

I, for one, would have been thrilled to see his new "motorcycle jumping over
the airplane while it cuts the ribbon" trick.

Jay,
As others have said, thanks for the North 40 party!

I just got home tonight from my 5600 mile road trip. It was worth every
mile.

Not sure if you remember me among all the other party goers, but I'm the 20
year old blonde guy building a Stits Flutterbug in California. I wish I
could have made it back up to the North 40 after Wednesday but that hike
from Scholler was a long one, and the trams always seemed to disappear when
I decided I needed one. Besides, as a first timer to Oshkosh I was always
busy running around looking at stuff and generally being amazed at how vast
it all was. I'm proud to say that I saw just about everything I wanted to
see, including a quick trip to the museum (and the Eagle Hangar Wall of
Honor to find my late father's name). This was one of the best experiences
of my life. It was truly moving and spectacular. The aircraft and airshow
were great, but experiencing the entire event and meeting others in the
aviation community were beyond words. I will be making the pilgrimage every
year from now on and wouldn't have traded this year's trip for anything in
the world.

So thanks, Jay, for the hospitality, and thanks to the entire aviation
community for demonstrating just how great a group it is. I won't be
forgetting this one for a while.

And just to make sure of that, I get to sort through 2000 digital
pictures...

Just suggest to him that he should run for the EAA Board Of Directors and
wait for the call...until hell froze over. It IS hard to say why.

Yeah and some of those pilots (about 5%) are probably single too! ;-)
