Although childish, there is a point.

As alluded to in part of this original post, some high school student
made comments about President Bush deserving to be dead (or some such)
on her MySpace site and then got hauled out of class by a couple of
Secret Service agents and given a good scare for doing so.

Were her comments childish? Yes. Did they warrant a heavy handed visit?
No.

This posting (the original) is just some clown baiting the ECHELON
system.

SNIP

And you know this how?

Let me ask you this, how old was Squeaky Fromm when she shot President
Ford?

Given the number of "incidents" in US schools with firerams and other
weapons, not taking someone issuing threats to the president somewhat
seriously just on the basis of their age would not seem to be wise.
ILike everying else, it's a matter of judgment as to how seriously to
take it and what to do about it.

Seems to me that we're getting half the story with a lot of "look at
the big bad FBI overreacting" spin on it. I'm willing to bet that
there's more trhat neither side want to talk about...from the FBI's
prespective, trying to keep quiet about "sources and methods" used to
determine what the reaction should be.

Lynette Fromm was 26 or 27 at the time, long out of grade school. Perhaps
the agents were looking for a threat they could actually handle with this
young child. Doonsbury had a valid point about the smirking chimp today.

Widely reported on the international press wires.

Stupid gun laws are another issue, as is the social problems that cause
a kid to go 'postal'.

Investigate - Yes, a good idea.

Drag 15 year old out of class, interrogate without lawyer or parent
present, threaten with outcomes beyond those legally available - No,
not a good idea.

Seems to me that we're getting half the story with a lot of "look at

The Secret Service are not the FBI, but the point is once they have
done a basic investigation they would have know that they didn't need
to swash this particular bug with a sledge hammer. Just turning up and
telling the girl what the law on making threats is would be enough to
have most kids needing clean jocks.

I'm not saying I like what the girl did (and others have done), but I'm
saying the response is not appropriate. I'm a highschool teacher and
you can bet your ass that I would not be letting any law enforcement
official take a kid from my class unless it was done properly (ie adult
like a teacher, parent or lawyer present).

I'm willing to bet that
there's more trhat neither side want to talk about...from the FBI's

Remember, these are the same people (or at least the head people are)
who told us that there were WMD in Iraq, told us Saddam Hussein
supported Al'Qaeda, tell us they are not torturing anyone, and seem
convinced that the detention camp at Gitmo is some how legal. Talk
about lying to your own people and wiping your butt on the
constitution!

You are so big on your rights and freedoms? Stand up for them then! Oh,
wait...You just did in the recent elections. Good for you.

Not a big secret if you know anything about SIGINT

So, if the secret service is informed of a posted threat against a
President, they shouldn't go find out if a teenager posted it? They
should ignore it and just assume it was a child? Or is it that a
threat should only be investigated if the originator includes his age
in the threat?

I don't think that even reading between the lines I suggested half of what
you suggest. I think whole affair of asking and answering your own question
has been done to death by Rummy far better than you. In any case the agents
did find out who was behind the "threat" to the smirking chimp could have
handled it in a much more appropriate fashion.

BTW, Gavrilo Princip was 19 when he killed Archduke Ferdinand and
started WW1.

Can't recall the name, but she was a caucasian punk-rock, EMO type.
Presumably from a Christian family, probably rebelling against that
too. ; )

The 'machinery' just picked up on the keywords and phrases on her blog
and raised a flag for agents to check out. It's just how that checking
was done that bothers me.
