One wonders if the UK contract competition was open to non-EU aircraft
manufacturers.

Only 600 UK jobs are expected to be created by this EADS £13bn RAF
tanker deal.

What with EADS building tanker aircraft for both the UK and US, one
wonders if they'll consider constructing them in China. After all,
EADS did announce their intention to build airliners there over a year

rivals from developing countries seek to enter their thriving
industry.

Airbus, a unit of Franco-German European Aeronautic Defence &
Space Co., said it had finalized plans to build an assembly plant

(published 2003) says Boeing were considered for this or
some similar deal.

Article apparenty from:-
"Boeing chief races to save pounds 13bn RAF tanker deal

The Independent is a somewhat serious National
Newspaper in the UK.

Yes. The RAF buy the best plane for the job. In the past, they have
bought US-made equipment, such as the Hercules or the current AWACS
platform. UK forces are also buying the JSF, made in the USA. In the
past they bought the F4 Phantom.

The UK military is nowhere near as picky as the US for the source of
aircraft. It used to be *ALL* US military aircraft had to be made in the
USA - for example, the US Marines Harriers were all made in the USA.
