Default AOPA rebate gone?

A friend of mine just sent me an email that he got a notice from MBNA
that the AOPA 5% rebate would be discountinued after this year and
instead he would get "2 points" for every dollar spent. I haven't
checked my mail yet today but I didn't see anything about this on
AOPA's web site.

Doesn't surprise me at all, now that MBNA is bought by Bank of America.
I always wonders how MBNA doesn't lose money giving 5% FBO rebate when
people would only put FBO purchases on that card. These days you can
always seem to get 1% rebate on some other cards to put all the other
credit card purchase on. So the MBNA card gets stuck with only the FBO
purchases.

I think the bank fee for processing credit card transactions is
something like 1-2%.

I got the letter today in the mail. Mine wasn't sent by MBNA, it was sent
by AOPA and didn't mention the 2 point thing, just a list of "Rewards
points" and went on and on about how it would be unlimited and applied to
all purchases but double for FBO's or something. I bet it will end up being
another 1% card.

I got the letter today from AOPA too. It says that beginning in Jan of
2007 you'll earn one reward point for each net retail dollar charged to
the card. You'll earn double points for every net retail dollar spent
and over 4000 qualified FBOs and other select aviation merchants. The
points can be redeemed for cash, merchandise, gift certificates, travel
and more. The letter didn't give any indication of what a point would be
worth. I'm also not sure what net retail dollar means but it smacks of
some legal mumbo jumbo to disqualify some or all of a purchase from
receiving points.

I got a letter in the mail last weekend from AOPA..
1 point for every dollar spent regardless of location or product,
2 points for aviation stuff you used to get the discount on..
only about 20% of charges to the card qualified for the discount..
so now.. no cash back.. but points that can be redeemed for cash and other
products..

MBNA -- raise the interest rates and cancel the rebates..

I haven't notice anything in the mail, but everything from AOPA other than
the magazine goes directly in the trash... Seems like everything else is
from their Legal Services group wanting me to join... I did notice a letter
within the last couple of weeks where MBNA raised my credit limit to around
$39K... Interesting since the only thing I ever charge on the account is my
AOPA membership and fuel purchases when I'm out of town... In other words,
*very* little gets charged on it these days... A few years ago, I charged my
engine overhaul on it and as such, it was worthwhile... If they get rid of
the rebate, I'll probably be tempted to cancel the card... Since the AOPA
membership is discounted with the card, I'll probably cancel it also...
Seems like I don't get a chance to read the damn magazine anymore anyway...

I'm not going to miss it much. Starting last year MBNA started
rejecting about 90% of the rebates I applied for. Most of the gas I
get is at FBO's that are at small airports, run under the charter of
the local township. So even though you buy the gas from "xxx Aviation"
- it shows up on your credit card bill as "City of xxx". Used to be no
problem, but now only about 1 in 10 are considered valid by MBNA.
Hardly worth it.

I also got the letter from them and initiated the correspondence
reprinted below. I can't say as the end of the rebate comes as a total
surprise, given the bank consolidation going on and the fact that many
of us only used the AOPA card when it would generate a rebate.

The note from Ms. Adams says that it will be a 2% rebate on all
purchases. This does not correspond to the original letter, which says
1% for most purchases, 2% on purchases from a list of qualified FBO's.

Thank you for your email to AOPA. While you no longer will receive 5%
cash back from the FBO rebate card, the new terms provide for you to
receive 2% on ANY purchase you make - not aviation specific. You are
not limited in the amount you can receive annually and you don't have
to go through the "rebate process" like you have in the past. The
updated program was designed to provide you with more options and to
make it more user-friendly.

If you have questions about the new program, please don't hesitate to
call 800-872-2672.

I have just received a letter from you detailing the changes to my AOPA
credit card account.

In my opinion, the new rebate formula is far, far worse than the old.
Either
3% worse of 150% worse, depending on just how you do your calculations.

In either case, I don't like it.
