Default technical question from The Movie

Maverick is sitting in the TACTS trailer getting his ass kicked for
performing a split S when he should have been thinking about how to save his
$40 million dollar airplane. Viper says if he selected zone 5 he could
extend his escape. What does zone 5 mean ? Always wondered about this.

What does zone 5 mean ?
Afterburner or "AB".

The Pratt & ****ney TF-30 engine in the F-14A has an afterburner with five
"zones". Selecting zone 5 means going to full power.

The TF-30 A/B in the F-14 staged in zones, that you could actually feel. Zone 1
thru 5, Zone 5 was left levers all the way forward, max A/B-
