Did the Vought F4U corsair have fabric covered wings?!?!?!?
On page 148 of "The Illustrated Fighting Aircraft of World War II" by Bill Gunston (1988): "Fabric-skinned wings became metal in the post-war -5" |

Early ones had the area aft of the main spars covered with fabric. I think the book mentioned may be in error, as (I believe?) they were metalized before the end of the war. The outboard (folding) sections were fabric covered thru the -4. The
leading edge was aluminum. The ailerons, rudder & elevators also were fabric & I think they remained so even on the -5. |
