Default Tools/code to produce heatmaps from .igc log files?

I'm looking for a tool to produce a heatmap from a set of .igc files based on how many GPS fixes are in proximity of a region.

Also interested in other ways to data mine sets of .igc files.

Motivation is curiosity.

Way back in the beginning of PDAs with flight computers WinPilot had a thermal advisor a file that could be developed by the PC version of Winpilot from IGC files. The file was copied to the PDA and could be view on the Winpilot PDA by turning on the function.

It seemed to worked well in the mountains but worthless in the flat lands. Probably because of the thermal producing peaks.

Yes I agree that a heat map may have little practical value because the terrain, clouds, etc., and a bit of experience, and some time to poke around, lead you to lift in the mountains.

I'm just curious about a heatmap view of my season of soaring. I'm not looking for a practical payoff.

It's interesting that WinPilot tried to exploit heatmaps 'back in the day'.

This Project from our flexible winged friends might be worth a click too.
