Default Osaba to claim World Record for freestyle? distance

As reported in the Austin American-Statesman, Gary Osaba flew a 615
mile (~989.7 km) flight on July 24, 2008 from Zapata, Texas to near
Lorenzo, Texas. It was reported as a "freestyle distance" flight,
direct distance is about 490 statute miles, so perhaps a free distance
with turn points is the attempt? Despite the ambiguity of the news
account, the article is well documented and photographed. See
http://www.statesman.com/news/conten...24gliding.html.

Congratulations Gary! Please, when you have a chance, let us know some
details about this flight.

Regards,
John

First, congratulations to Gary for an outstanding flight.

As Gary explained in a previous post, this is a free distance flight -
no declared goal.

Also, the reporter didn't understand that circling was not part of the
distance, but insisted on getting some idea of distance flown
including the circling, then presented that as the distance flown. At
least the rest of the news article is fairly accurate and the graphics
are very nice as well.

Thanks for the clarification.

Probably wouldn't have gone half as far in any other "modern"ship.
