WestPac Deployments
Recently during a discussion about WestPac carrier airgroup deployments the
question came up about how many carrier deployments occurred between the end of WWII in 1945 and about 1965 when the VN War started. Any one know where this kind of data might be available? WDA end |

Any one know where this kind of data might be available? A general breakdown would be: Not many from late 1945 to 1950 (focus shifted back to the Atlantic and Med); A good number during the Korean war (about three at all times starting into late 1950 - two on station, one off station); Normal rotation of approx. two carriers in WestPac at any one time w/ an increase of one addt'l CVA during any given crisis for the remaining part of the 1950s and into the early 1960s; Then the buildup, which actually started in 1964. Will check the deployment DB to see if a cut can be made to come up w/ a rough number. MW |

Using the following parameters for CVs: deployed after 01 JAN 46; returned prior to 01 JAN 65 and cruised beyond Hawaii; i.e., went into WestPac. Includes CVS/CVSG deployments and finally includes "World" cruises which commenced from the East Coast -- the raw count was 134 deployments. The number doesn't include those boats which remained in WestPac following SEP 45, such as Antietam (CV-36) for example. Hope the above raw number helps. MW |
