Cambridge Vario Front Glass

I have care and feeding of an older model Cambridge electric vario. The
front glass has been cracked, and I need to try to find a replacement.
The only ID my AME can find on the casing is the following part number:
500-1119-9005 If anyone can identify the model number and, more
importantly, where I might source a new front glass for it, I'd greatly
appreciate it.

Your variometer is a vintage Cambridge CVS40, 50 or CVS60 depending on the
display being in Knots, feet or M/S (all are the same, just different
markings on the dial).this variometer is quite "vintage" from the late
1960's to mid 70's....and may not be worthy of your efforts to repair but if
you give me a call I have a few of these here that are non-functional
(probably could be repaired....but..why?? ..) if you'll pay the postage,
I'd be happy to send you one for free that you can scavenge the glass face
plate from ....

I had the same problem and just cut out a new face from sheet
plexy/polycarb the same thickness. Belt sander or grinder to round the
corners...Easy, quick, cheap, looks fine and works good. Make sure you
don't take the whole instrument apart to get the face off. It comes
off the front without even having to remove the unit from the panel.
At least mine did.

Great offer. Ours must be a CVS40, since it's calibrated in knots.
It has been working just fine, except that the cracked glass has been
pushed in and has pinned the needle to the backing. The cracks have
also become so extensive as to make it almost impossible to read.
I'm going to just double check that we can get the front glass off
without removing ithe vario completely, then I'd be happy to take you
up on your offer.

Thanks for the suggestion. We had thought of just having the glass
cut, but couldn't find anyone locally with a drill fine enough to
replicate the hole for the attachement screw.
The plexy may be easier to do, so that is much appreciated.

you're quite welcome..........I've had many variometers apart in the past
just to see what each is made like and most are quite simple to open and
examine.the CVS40/50 types are actually very easy.there should be (if they
haven't fallen out) 3 self taping screws in the rear of the case.just remove
these and the guts will all come out from the rear.....actually, replacing
the case with glass intact is the easiest way to fix yours if the glass is
not free the from the case.....just let me know if you need this one

to receive a component whose internals may no longer be entierly
functional, but whose external appearance is still clear and good
looking?
Therefore you've just offered to pay the freight to clear out some of
his fuselage and wing components which still look good but are
structurally unsound?
