Default The DD-214: For Reservists and Guardspersons who served during a military operation

The DD-214: For Reservists and Guardspersons who served during a
military operation

1. All-Service Branch Guard and Reserve personnel should print this
advisory for future reference.

2. Because many Guard and Reserve units do not provide documentation
similar to Form DD-214 ("Certificate of Release from Active Duty"),
The American War Library STRONGLY advises you to insist upon obtaining
a DD-214 at the close of any and all active duty service periods.

(DD = Department of Defense)

3. You have the option, which you MUST insist upon, having any medals
or awards you received during any immediately-completed active duty
service period, as well as medals and awards received during previous
active or inactive service periods listed on your the current DD-214
you MUST receive at the end of a current active duty service period.

4. Continuous documentation of your awards, medals, foreign duty,
humanitarian, or other special service on each DD-214 is necessary
should you wish to present (one or more) of your DD-214(s) to obtain
post military services, admissions or benefits exclusive to recipients
of certain medals/awards or foreign service.

5. If you are not in possession of a DD-214 for any previous active
duty service period (not including active periods devoted exclusively
for training) The American War Library STRONGLY advises you to contact
your immediate commander to obtain any/all DD-214(s) for those
previous active duty service periods.
