Default Private Exam

What was the hardest question you experienced during the oral part of your
Private exam? Or, which question did you stumble on almost/actually fail
your exam? Just curious to see what people have stumbled over.

What was the hardest question you experienced during the oral part of your
Private exam?

The only question I didn't answer correctly was the difference between an
alternator and a generator. Boy do I feel stupid about that. The DE later
told me that I had given the best oral exam he had done in years and that is
why he started asking all kinds of unusual questions about electrical
systems and such. Then he laughed at me for missing such an easy question
after answering a bunch of other much harder ones. Basically it was an EE
giving a ChE a hard time.

[Good thing my oral was good, I don't recall my practical being very good.]

Well this wasn't for the private but for the instrument rating. And it
shouldn't have been such a hard question. He asked "how will you know
if you have the proper take-off power?". And I didn't know the
numbers. It isn't in the Seminole P.O.H., and my instructor never
said, "you need 28 inches and 2700 RPM". So I had to say I don't know,
and feel like an idiot. Turns out this particular examiner also flies
for Air Canada and has appeared as an expert witness in a case where a
pilot took off and did not have full power available, with bad results.
So I guess it's one of his pet peeves. Good point though. Now I
check for the specific numbers instead of glancing at the guages and
saying "Yup, looks about right."

So, what was the DPE trying to tell me when he asked: "How are ya this
morning?"

My most recent student stumbled over the maintenance items and had a
hard time with the difference in an AD and a Maintenance or Service
letter.
On the written he had a problem with ADF and, of course some weather
but he scored a 90.
The flight check was a piece of cake and he did very well. I wonder if
I had anything to do with it????

Depending on his/her tone of voice this could be encouraging or
foreboding...
