Default Navigation problem

Here's a cute trivial problem I usually use to kill time with curious students.
There are places on the Earth where you can fly; 1 mile south, then 1 mile east (or west), and then 1 mile north, and end up in the same place. One of these places is the north pole. Where are the others?

the correct distance from the south pole that is one mile north of the
place where 1 mile is one, two, three, or more circles of the pole, of
course. There are an infinity of them, but I think the most distant
one from the pole is the order of 1 plus1/6.28 miles from the south
pole.
