Memorial sought for Osprey crash victims
QUANTICO, Va. (AP) — The widows and parents of eight Marines killed
during two test flights of V-22 Osprey military aircraft in 2000 want
to build a memorial to the men they consider to be aviation pioneers.
They hope to erect the monument at Quantico Marine Corps Base in 2006,
the same year the Marine Corps hopes to make the tilt-rotor aircraft
operational. The Osprey can lift and hover like a helicopter and fly
like a plane. The Osprey is slated to begin operational evaluations in
January and be fully operational in summer 2006, said Capt. Jerome
Bryant, a Marine Corps spokesman.
