Israeli Troops Invades Bethlehem

Before Dawn Friday Israeli Army

officers ordered Palestinian security

officers to abandon their positions at

all check posts leading to Bethlehem

area. Immediately after the PA police

left their positions, around 20 army

vehicles moved into the city and few of

its sounding villages, marking the

first Israeli invasion of Bethlehem

after seven months of Palestinian

Authority security responsibility.

Troops moved into Bethlehem through

Beit Sahour and Tequa in the south and

Beit Jala and Al-Khader village in the

north.

Eyewitnesses reported that army units,

backed by Apaches surrounded Dehasheia

and Aida refugee camps as other army

units patrolled the city streets.

At Aida refugee camp, eyewitnesses

reported that soldiers surrounded the

home of Ali Ja'ara, who blow himself up

in bus 19 in Jerusalem killing 10

Israelis and wounding 50, forced the

family to the outside as a first step,

locals believe, to demolish it. Local

sources also said that Ja'ara family

moved overnight their belongings

outside the home in fear of it being

destroyed by the army.

According to local sources, troops

sounded the headquarters of the

Palestinian pre-emptive security forces

and conducted home to home search in

both Wad Miali Neighborhood and Dehasha

refugee camp.

While local sources reported that few

residents were arrested, there were no

reports on exchange of fire or

casualties.

An army source said that soldiers are

searching for wanted Palestinians,

saying that few were arrested for

questioning and that the operation was

ongoing.

The invasion of Bethlehem followed a

meeting between Israeli Prime Minister

Ariel Sharon and his Defense Minister

Shaul Mofaz to discuss the available

options to respond to the Jerusalem

bombing attack.

The Jerusalem bombing attack and the

invasion that followed brought

Bethlehem back to being a hot crisis

front after seven months of relative

quietness; reminding Bethlehem

residents that there can be no quite

islands within a stormy crisis.

While Israel military analysts describe

the military operation as limited and

aimed at arresting few "suspects" and

possibly destroying the home were

Ja'ara lived, the seen of soldiers

patrolling their streets would add to

the life hardships they already face.
