Excellent effort by CLGC Prez John DeRosa who put on an outstanding
line up including SSA Exec Dennis Wright who spoke on the state of the
SSA and the need for more members. Good Q and A from the 90 plus
pilots in attendance. Highlights include the need for more soaring
flight data from clubs and commercial operators and the need to grow
and strengthen membership. Wright reported that direct mail to lapsed
members had the biggest impact netting 300 new memembers in 2004.

Dr. Dan Johnson braved a late-season blizzard in Wisconsin to give a
three part lecture on medical factors and hydration, perception versus
reality in the VFR world and aging and competence. Dr. Dan's talk kept
the audience spellbound not only for the clarity of his presentation
but also for the sartorial splendor of his (signature) wardrobe.
Pendleton has no better spokesmodel than Dr. Dan.

California pilot and Soaring Magazine columnist George Thelen and his
little Red Devil stimulated a good group discussion with the members
about the hazards of harzardous thoughts...they can kill.

Local pilots Herb Kilian and Mike Shakman provided a primer on contest
soaring which no doubt will incite a good number of those present to
try a contest this summer. Kilian's confessions of his lack of
confidence at his initial contests will give us the strength to
overcome our fears and experience the rush of contest flying.

The luncheon featured a tribute to local Chicago soaring legend Rudy
Kunda, who passed away last year. Remarks by Dennis Wright, Jim Short,
and Rich Carlson cited Kunda for inspiring scores of soaring pilots in
the Windy City to stretch their wings and for making a significant cash
contribution to the SSA, through a bequest. Rudy's gift will help
insure the health and vitality of our sport.

Thumbs up to the speakers and kudos to John DeRosa, Scott Wolfe and the
many volunteers from the Chicago Land Glider Council who put on a
terrific show!
