I'm not sure, since I don't know what the benefits are today. But I
took ground school in college under the GI bill.

Why doesn't our military have a similar benefit today?

No idea. Don't they still offer college help? My ground school was
for ROTC, but they had to let non-ROTC (e.g. me, an ex-SSgt.) in as
well. Seems like that could still be done.

My Dad used his WWII GI Bill benefits to get his PPL.

He motivated me to get mine, which I paid for mine out of
pocket...guess I'm a GA dividend paid on the investment the GI Bill
made in Dad way back when.

I think you meant to respond to R Gardner, not me.

I was supporting you, saying my experience was similar, not
disagreeing with you.

What about the 60% you can get for instruction beyond the private with a
Part 141 school? That's still in effect, no?

Back in mid-60's they didn't pay for the flying lessons directly, but
several FBO's had teamed up with a college to offer degrees in Professional
Pilot Training. Ground schools were 3 semester hours, and flight programs
were 3 semester hours, so along with normal classroom courses, I was taking
a full load of at least 14 hr per semester, and collecting GI benefits for
that. Working full time, night school, and flying kept me pretty busy for
several years. Got my PPL, had the written passed for commercial and
instrument, then one eye went from fair to horrible so forgot any
aspirations for getting on with any airline - but did end up with a few
years of college and 160 wonderful flight hours........

I was instructing with an Air Force Aero Club last year and we were told
that to take advantage of GI benefits a veteran needed to have the private
ticket first. The GI $$ could be used for advanced ratings or certificates.
