Student Pilot equipment

Refurbished Lightspeed headsets can be bought with a warranty from
Lightspeed. Two years ago I spent $200 apiece on 15k's for the whole
family and they are still good as new, 140 hours later. The only thing
I wish we had was an automatic shutoff for the *(($)&$ batteries---at
this point it would have almost been worth it to spend another $60 on 15XLs!

Also... electronic E6Bs are legal for using on the written test, but
last I heard, PDAs are not.

I used the battery-free whiz wheel when I was a student and never
regretted it. I still carry one in my bag and use it regularly, and it
is often faster for things like TAS calculations than pushing buttons.
Maybe I'm just a slow button pusher!

You can get a QFR Solo model for $140. I paid nearly that for my first set of
Sigtronics.

Yes but thats not ANR. The QFR Cross-country is ANR, and its around $300
new.

I found the same thing when I started using foam earplugs under my PNR
headset. Most of the engine noise disappeared, I could hear ATC
clearly, and I was much less tired after flying. I'll probably buy an
ANR headset myself some day, but I don't know if I'd suggest that a
student put out that much money so early on.

I recall some problems at my school with mismatched headsets;
one of the instructors had a personal headset that would completely
block the mike output of the schools headset, due to large impedance
mismatch & a shared input channel in the radio setup.

She had to use the school headset in order for the student to be able to
talk. It would be a drag to get an expensive set that you couldn't
use...of course it worked fine on it's own, or with another similar load.

Here's another vote for a good headset from the start. Get an ANR
model! By all means! You'll enjoy flying so much more. And i second the
recommendation for Lightspeeds.

Beyond that, a logbook, a kneeboard and charts are probably essential.
Should you have a PDA, that will serve as an E6-B equivalent.

Well, it's 275. And if you look at the Avshop branded ANR headset at
avshop.com, you'll find it looks very similar at a lower price of 249
;-)
